It is not hard to get worked up when you take a hard look at our present state. A government running wild, a failing educational system, prisons so full we let violent offenders out early, a teetering economy, and anarchy spreading around the world leaves ones head to spin.
It is also hard to stay worked up. Life has a way of jumping in front of you and demanding your attention. It is hard to be concerned about a far away government, a broken educational system, mean people, GDP, or the state of freedom in a far away land when you need gas in the car to go to the hospital and see a sick relative.
The big picture gets blurry and out of focus when your kids get in trouble in school, the car doesn’t run, the septic backed up, or your best friend is having a tough time. Life is tough, and it is getting tougher.
Is it really that bad? No, and Yes. It is all about perspective. We in this country think it is very important to keep people from being exposed to 2nd hand smoke. 2nd hand smoke is bad. We have removed it as a threat to the workplace in many areas. Does that mean the workplace air is perfectly safe? I doubt it. Many of the factories I have been in have plenty of airborne hazards that have nothing to do with cigarettes.
We also seem to get pretty worked up over someone mentioning God, or displaying a religious symbol.
In much of the rest of the world people are dreaming of a better floor in their home than dirt. People are struggling with real religious oppression. People are bombed, beat, imprisoned, and decapitated for their religious views.
The point is we have it pretty good. It is hard to get too worked up about our irresponsible government when things are so good. Many see the problems with an entitlement society. Many see the problems with a government focused on the short term. Many see the position we are in when foreign interests have more say in what our government does than American citizens do.
So what’s a knowledgeable, educated citizen to do? Shout from the rooftops. Tell everyone you run into. Teach your children. This is the greatest country the world has ever known. It is time we start expecting a government that is worthy of it.
Public service is not about a job for life. It should not be about the accumulation of power. It should also not be a way to enrich yourself at the citizens expense.
Public service has nothing to do with political parties, even though our federal government has become a partisan cesspool. Public service is about serving your community. It is about looking out for the good of the country, it’s future, and it’s people.
America rise up and take your country back for your children and grandchildren.
